Meet Our Members

 20240601 NCBF CCCB 062

Our band has members of all ages, from highschoolers to 70+ years old and all playing levels, from amatuer to professional.  Here is interesting information about some of our valued members.

Lois Hofmann is the conductor of the Clarke County Community Band.  She has been a music educator in Virginia since 1983.  She graduated magna cum laude from Shenandoah University with degrees in Music Education and Music Therapy.  She has taught on the elementary and middle school levels, and she served as the band director at Frederick County Middle School for over 33 years.  She retired from that position in November 2019.

In addition to conducting the Community Band, Lois sings with Winchester Musica Viva and the Arts Chorale of Winchester.  She teaches private music lessons to middle school and high school band students at the Treehouse Music and Arts Studio in Winchester, as well as giving lessons at home via Zoom.  She and her friend Melinda Russell volunteer their time at a local nursing home several times each month, helping to bring music to the residents there through Hymn Sings and playing jazz standards as a clarinet and piano duo.

He was selected as a freshman to join the Thomas Jefferson High School Marching Colonials and his first marching experience was at a Washington Redskin football game. (His knees still shake from that!) David was a four year member of the band, including marching and symphonic band, and made All-Regional and All-State his Senior Year while competing in every event the band was involved in. He went to Va Tech and made the Marching Virginians, Tech's civilian marching band. His freshman year he was selected best marcher. David quit band his Sophomore year as Engineering studies took precedence. He put his trombone away for 17 years and picked it back up to support the Kena Temple Shrine band. He followed this by playing for Ron Dye in the Kernstown Symphonic Winds, and then in 2001, joined the Clarke County Community Band. David has been the Band's president for more than 14 years.

trombonedonwalden

Don Walden plays trombone.  Don Walden began conducting at the age of 8 years, conducting a 40-piece orchestra in a spirited rendition of The Stars And Stripes Forever, by John Philip Souza. Two years later, he began playing the trombone.  At 17, he placed 2nd in the state of Oregon solo contest; at 18, he placed first in the state.  At 19 he began conducting a youth Orchestra weekly, with monthly performances.

Don graduated from Southern Oregon University with a degree in Music Education just before his 22nd birthday and began teaching junior and senior high school band right away. Throughout his career, he taught all levels of band, choir, marching band, and orchestra in public schools, private schools, community college, his own private school, Bay Area Performing Arts Acedemy, and other community groups.  His bands were often awarded the highest place in festivals.

Don's last gig was single-handedly presenting a community-wide performance of Handel's The Messiah, rehearsing both choir and Orchestra, as well as PR, stage setup,  and all other facets necessary for a production of this nature.  Don and his wife joined their daughter, husband, and two grandsons in Virginia in 2021, joining Clarke County Community Band at that time.  He continues playing on his church worship team, as he has done since age 15.
